29 Feb 2008 A meme, because I needed to post something today, right?

28 Feb 2008 On knitting a geek, or being a knitter and a geek, something like that

I haven’t even knit my first pair of socks, but I know I must make these socks because they’re called Rivendell. Yes, I’ve been stalking these socks since they were on the Yarn Harlot and yes I added the designer’s blog to my once again expanding blog-rolls.

But, then again, we already knew I was this kind of a geek.

26 Feb 2008 I just report ‘em. I don’t make ‘em up.

Runaway Lawnmower Kills Monk

It’s tragic, and yet that headline takes all the tragedy out of it. Thanks Reuters!

25 Feb 2008 Accounting, MBAs, and Puppy dogs
 |  Category: personal  | One Comment

I got to my accounting class tonight only to find out it was canceled when I got there. Apparently the freezing rain wasn’t enough on top of the ice already on the ground to warrant canceling class. They needed the snow to start flying, too.

But I made it to class, dammit! I should get to be taught. (Okay. I know it’s a sickness to beg for accounting class to be held, but because class got canceled tonight, they’re canceling Spring Break, too. Bastards!)

On the plus side, I got to spend some quality time with my personal statement for admission to MBA studies. I hate these things. There’s nothing quite like a personal statement with directions that read “Explain in two pages or less why you think we should let you come to our school” to make a person think “I’m worthless and I have nothing to offer.” (Yes, I know it’s not true. I’m only telling you what I was thinking at the time. I wasn’t validating it.) Fortunately it’s done now, so I can pop it into the mail and think no more of it for a few weeks.

In the end, my biggest frustration came down to this: No matter how much experience I have or how good an employee I prove myself to be, I will not be taken seriously in the business world unless I have an MBA. It’s utter crap, because anyone with an MBA will tell you that they learned more from work than they ever did in the classroom, but that stupid piece of paper is the key to the next set of doors I want to open, so get one I must.

On the brighter side, I’ve finally managed to convince my Hopelessly Rosie Roomie that we need (neeeeeeds! I tell you!) a dog, so we’re going to look at a dog to rescue this weekend. The pictures I sent to her of Chris the puddy and a different Chloe puddy finally worked according to my evil plan. Bwa-ha-ha! She agreed that we could go meet puppies and see if there’s one that wants to be our new friend.

Like I told her, it’s cheaper and safer than adopting a Nicaraguan baby.

23 Feb 2008 See Hockey Stink On Ice. . . .

I went to Cedar Rapids Roughriders game last night with and the Dronkey. We waved across the arena to and her DH, who were almost exactly across the ice from us. seemed to have a pretty good time, until the idiots above us started encouraging their four year old to throw popcorn at drunken daddy so daddy could catch it in his mouth.

Note: Popcorn down the back of ones shirt is not pleasant. Fortunately, that wasn’t until after the second period, so it was great until then. Unless you count the fact that the Roughriders were stinking up the ice and couldn’t clean the garbage out. . .

Okay, the highlight of the evening was really seeing the Central Garrison of the 501st Legion turned out for Star Wars night at the arena. The Dronkey, in particular, got a kick out of it.

Well, right up until we left at the beginning of the third period.

We had to walk past “Darth Maul” to leave. “Maul,” was of course, hamming it up for the kids while parents were snapping pictures of their kiddles with the best Darth ever. (Or at least the only Darth worth giving an homage to in an X-Man film. Thank you, Ray Park for that bit of fan-service. You know we love you for it.)

The Dronkey froze. Nothing personal to the Central Garrison’s “Maul.” The Dronkey apparently does the same thing with Shopping Mall Santas and the Easter Bunny and, well, anyone in costume really. Personally, I understand it. I have the same aversion to clowns, too.

I leaned down to the Dronkey and said, “It’s okay. He’s probably an engineer in real life. I’ll bet he’s really a nice man. He’s just dressing up as Darth Maul because people have fun seeing Darth Maul, and it makes people happy. He scares me a little, too.”

Mostly for the fanboy factor, but I didn’t tell the Dronkey that.

Besides, it made the ice arena look a bit like an Imperial ordered event, with Stormtroopers at every exit, ensuring we had the good time decreed by the Emperor. How can you not love that? I know Dronkey did (right up until the whole “walking by Darth Maul” bit).

Besides, we all have our little fandom moments.

Mine was finding out that Simon Pegg has been cast as Scotty in the upcoming Star Trek film. (Insert fan-girl squee here!) I’d been planning to miss this one, but I’d go see Simon Pegg read Stephen King’s grocery list at an open mike night at Barnes and Noble. I can certainly put up with another potentially lousy Star Trek film for Simon Pegg. Heck, the only way this could be better, would be for a walk on appearance of Mark Donovan (all hail our hulking zombie lord), too!

All in all, not a bad night.

21 Feb 2008 I can has wireless!

Joy! ’s DH has made our wireless router work. I can now use my laptop in the warmest room in the house (our south facing living room). Even now, I’m enjoying the thrill of typing and not freezing at the same time.

Joy! Joy! Joy!

13 Feb 2008 On the topic of migraines
 |  Category: personal  | One Comment

At what point does a migraine become “one too many?” Can you say it’s at one, or do you have to suffer through years of them before you get to that point? Or is it when you, say, are on your third discrete migraine in fourteen days and are still dragging yourself to the program management training class your manager at work wants you to take?

To top it off, I slipped last night and cracked my ass the other way, because I’m just that freakin’ graceful.

Today’s picture is of the Lofoten archipelago in Norway, which is above the Arctic Circle, “but winters there are relatively mild.”

We’re supposed to get another 2 - 6 inches of snow. :P

07 Feb 2008 And then, we had to dig out. . .

05 Feb 2008 Featured at Lazy Perry Ranch Blog!
 |  Category: crafting  |  Tags:  | 10 Comments

I actually made someone else’s blog. Collette over at the Lazy Perry Ranch, one of my favorite etsy sellers for my (not so) secret yarn snob moments, featured the pictures I sent to her of the fingerless mitts and neckie (which I blogged about here) that I made from her Goblin Flower Homespun. Collette also dyed the yellow yarn I used to make the Swell Hat for HR.

She’s very kindly flattering to my skills as a knitter. It’s such a beautiful yarn to work with and the color is fabulous, like a sunset. It would be difficult not to do something that turned out beautiful with it.
