05 Nov 2008 this post is not about historic events

While the election looks like a landslide from an electoral perspective, the popular vote broke down to 52% of voters choosing (now President-elect) Obama and 46% choosing Senator McCain, with the remaining two percent split between Ralph Nader and all the other independant candidates.  That’s not the overwhelming majority that reporters would like to present. The same people who voted Obama as the next president also appear to be passing Proposition 8 in California.  I’m still processing how I feel about both issues, which represent the insane dichotomy of public opinion (black okay. gays bad) and just how close the divide is between the two sides.

I’ve said from the moment when both candidates were finally picked that no matter who won, either candidate would bring four years of political turmoil, but for different reasons.  McCain would have brough international charges of fascism.  Obama has me wondering “Can the American Presidency be bought?” and “When will the white supremecists come out of the woodwork and try something idiotic?” I’m not sure how I feel about those things, either.

Instead, while I sort those things out, I present the best picture I’ve ever taken of Boo.

Boo at her most beautiful

Boo at her most beautiful

It’s very difficult to get a really good picture of a black cat.  For starters, cats aren’t generally the most willing of subjects as far as posing go.  I mean really, I have cats who come to their names when called, but teaching a cat to sit and stay is an exercise in frustration.  A cat’s going to do what the cat wants to do and you just have to take a boat tonne of pictures and hope for the best.

With a black cat, the added difficulty comes from the depth of their color.  Capturing inky saturated hues without washing them out, or completely losing all detail in their depths is more luck than either art or science.  If you take two pictures of a cat of any other color to get one good one, you need six of a black cat to hope to get anything useable.

With Boo, who is particularly aloof, I count on taking at least ten pictures and maybe getting one that’s acceptable.  Not good, mind you.  Just acceptable.  Given those parameters, this picture is a miracle.

I caught Boo just waking up from a nap.  I snapped as many pictures from as many different angles as I could without disturbing her.  For this particular picture, I was laying on the ground next to her and she stretched out toward me in one of her rare affectionate moments.  It really captures her grace and the inky depth of her fur.

Unlike this one.

This picture is the same cat. Really.

This picture is the same cat. Really.

See how her color is washed out. Plus, not her usual graceful self.  It looks like the kind of picture a popular girl might be mortified to find posted on the internet after she over-indulged at a spring break beer blast.  It’s the kind of picture I usually get of Boo and it always reminds me that my Camera-fu is weak, lest I become overconfident.

My tiger tabby, Fezzik, obsesses over shoes. I’ve seen plenty of dogs do this kind of thing, but cats?  I thought they were supposed to be more dignified than that.

Not my fuzzy little tiger.  Leave a pair out where he can get at them, and he’ll have his head buried in like they were covered in tuna and catnip.  It’s kind of embarrassing when guests come over, because he doesn’t limit himself to family shoes.

Fezzik shows his taste for the finer things by relaxing with my new blue pumps.

31 Oct 2008 When a black cat crosses your path

This morning on the radio, the DJ told a story about how weird it was that she woke up and had a black cat cross her path on Halloween. After all, it’s supposed to be unlucky for black cats to cross your path.

I don’t think that’s so strange.  Boo, my black cat, crosses my path every morning, trying to herd me to the breakfast dish.

Boo!

Boo!

Sometimes, I’m really happy I have cats. When you come home, it’s good to know that you’ve been missed while you were away.  The boys always let me know I was missed.  Even if I just stepped outside to decide if I need to rake some leaves.

These three faces always greet me when I come home.

These three faces always greet me when I come home. Usually because they want something, like treats, or the litter box cleaned. Sometimes they even purr and cuddle, as if to say they missed me. Sometimes.

My lawn is really starting to need me, too.

It's good to be needed.

It's good to be needed. Right?

I’ll leave some leaf litter on the lawn over the winter, to provide protection for the sod.  The rest, however, will be raked away.  Too much ground cover can smother the lawn, or so I’ve been told.

This is too much ground cover.

This is pretty, but too much ground cover.

There is speculation that this weekend was the weekend for peak color in these parts.  I’m glad I decided that I didn’t need to rake that badly yet.  Instead, I took my camera out and went for a hike.  These leaves will still be here in a day or so.  I’ll post pictures in the next few days.

Sully and Fezzie sleep in my knitting chair.

Sully and Fezzie sleep in my knitting chair.

When we brought home Sully, I hoped he and Boo would bond and snuggle together in a cozy pile of kitty goodness.

It didn’t happen.

To say that Boo is not overly fond of Sully is an understatement.  It’s a wonder she doesn’t claw his eyes out.  I used to count it a good day if Boo would sit on the same couch as Sully with a human Maginot Line between them.

Now that we have Dust Bunny and Fezzik, things are different.  Bunny and Fezzie are the closest of littermates and Sully is like their big brother, fondly watching over them.  My dreams of kitten cuteness overload are regularly fulfilled . . .

. . . usually in my favorite chair.

I suppose nothing’s ever perfect, but kitten love comes mighty close even if it is in my favorite chair.

08 Sep 2008 against the unwritten rules of ravelry

Yes, I’ve finished two hats without getting pictures of them yet.  Apparently, it’s “against the unwritten rules of Ravelry” to do that, at least according to my sister Ninn, but I’ve been knitting until it’s too dark to get good pictures. Everyone will just have to be satisfied with a picture from my blog fodder archive instead.

05 Sep 2008 too cute
 |  Category: personal  |  Tags:  | Leave a Comment

When we got Sully to be Boo’s playmate and she rejected him, I was crushed.  Sully is the king of the cute kitties and very playful, even as an adult cat.  When we brought Fezzik and Bunny into the house, we were very concerned about Sully because in tomcats sometimes kill kittens that aren’t their own.

Dust Bunny (top) and Fezzik (bottom) are getting so big.  They’re about double the size they were when the came home a little over a month ago.  They’re already getting that long legged teen look.  I realized if I didn’t get pictures soon, there wouldn’t be any “kitten” left to photograph.

23 Jul 2008 dracula scarf update
 |  Category: crafting, knitting, personal  |  Tags: , ,  | One Comment

Just a quick note to say that the Dracula scarf is off the needles and ready to block after I get home from work tonight.  I’ll save my remarks for the project summary, but I will say that HR’s got a new name for the scarf now that it’s done.  I’ll write the summary after starting the blocking, so I can get pictures, because her editorial about the scarf needs a visual to go with it.

We gave DB his second wormer last night, and he’s listless again, but not yet running a fever.  I think the last bout of sick kitty for him was the wormer, even though symptoms that time didn’t appear for a few days.  HR’s calling the vet now, to see what he recommends.  At least this time, DB’s sick during the week, so we can take him to our regular vet and not the emergency vet.

I got very little done today in the way of planning for the blog this coming week.

At 8:00 this morning, we took our little black kitten (which we planned to name Inigo but ended up naming Dust Bunny for his propensity to always have some kind of lint sticking in his fur) to the emergency vet. He was listless, refusing to eat or drink, and running a 104.5 degree (Fahrenheit) temperature. The normal range for cats is between 100 & 102 degrees F.

They ran the full range of tests. No feline leukemia and no real anomalies in his blood chemistry, so it’s a bit of a mystery as to what’s wrong. We brought him home with antibiotics and a set of instructions for what to do for him to help keep him comfortable and what we should watch for. All HR & I could think about was the time we had a little black abby guinea pig. He was fine for a week, then developed a cold and died overnight and there was nothing we could do for him.

I’ve had to monitor his fever over the course of the day. The poor little guy is starting to dread the thermometer coming. I can hardly blame him, but it’s for his own good. A fever much higher than the one we took him in with could kill him quicker than we could get him help.

His fever seems to come and go, but we’ve at least been able to entice him to eat and drink. By this evening, he was interested in a bit of a romp with his brother Fezzik, so we’re hoping that this is just some little cold that he picked up when he was at the vet on Monday getting his temporary kitten vaccinations. It didn’t leave me much time for anything beyond working on my projects.

Hopefully tomorrow I’ll be able to get some time to take photos and show some work in progress.
